A Slam Dunk

student shooting a free throw

This past Friday evening MS8 hosted DUNK FOR 8,  a fun-filled, new community-wide event at the Westinghouse campus. Held in the recently-renovated Westinghouse gym, the evening’s free activities included dribbling races, a free throw competition, and a skills course for lower and middle school children. In addition, games of three-on-three basketball were held, with a winner emerging from both the boys’ and girls’ brackets.

The highlight for many was a full-court match-up between the middle school students and a team of teachers/parents. The crowd was electric, with allegiances split between the junior and senior circuits. While the students had superior speed and endurance, in the end, led by the heroic efforts of PS8/MS8 teachers Mr. Ellison, Mr. Klingensmith, and Mr. M, the teachers/parents squeaked out a 22-19 victory.

Special thanks go out to event chair Cynthia Arato who organized and ran all the contests and games; to Dan and Lucas Weisberg who served as referees; to Bee Tutored the event sponsor; to Gran Electrica, Park Plaza Diner, Kogane Ramen, Heights Falafel, and Hill Country Barbecue for donating food; to Karen McDermott and Natalia Gedanke for soliciting food donations; and to security and custodial staff at Westinghouse Campus.
