MS 915 Community ‘CHiPs’ in

Paper bag lunches with heart notes

As the season of Thanksgiving approached us, we felt the need to give to those in need. The 8th grade students were asked to donate a list of different grocery items. The donations were used by the teens of Saint Boniface Church to make bagged lunches for the soup kitchen and women’s shelter at CHiPs in Park Slope.

The entire MS 915 community chipped in to give donations to the service project.

The event took place on Friday, November 22nd at the Saint Boniface Church on Willoughby and Duffield Street. The night started off with a few ice breaker activities that included some very tasty snacks and of course the handfuls of M&Ms. After we got to learn about each other a little bit more, we all sat down at a table and had pizza and drinks together. Then the work began, we set up a factory line with different stations to make and pack the sandwiches ( I worked at the cheese/ meat station). Once the sandwiches made their way from one end of the table to the other they were placed in a brown paper bag with a fruit and a heartwarming note written by students in the 8th grade at MS 915. By the end we had about 100 lunch bags that would be distributed at the CHiPs’ building the next day.

Next day, teens from St Boniface, 8th grader Jaidyn D. and Ms. Marcellin went to distribute the bagged lunches at CHiPs.

In my experience, the service project was a great way to give back to my community while also bonding with other teens at the church. Unexpectedly it provided a link between my school and my church that would have never been made if it wasn’t for Ms. Marcellin and the church. In the future I hope our grade can participate in more service projects with organizations like CHiPs, it will serve as a way for community service to make its way into our education and will give kids like me more opportunities to serve in our communities and show us how rewarding it can be to give back.
