Barbra Kay

Born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio, Ms. Kay has had a variety of jobs before she became a teacher: social worker, investigator, probation officer, and therapist. She lived in Boston after graduating from Heidelberg College with a degree in Communication and Theater Arts, and after earning a Masters degree in Criminal Justice, she moved to Washington, DC and worked in a residential program for adolescents, while working on her Masters degree in Clinical Psychology. Following this, she moved to NYC, and joined the Teaching Fellows program, working in schools in Harlem, East New York, and the Bronx. She currently lives in Bed-Stuy and has been a teacher for 17 years.

Ms. Kay’s favorite part of teaching is getting to know her students, and helping them build confidence through their mastery of skills and content. She also enjoys working with middle school students, because they are funny, insightful, and challenging. She loves to see students grow and develop over the course of a school year. She enjoys learning from her students, as much as she hopes they enjoy learning with her.

Ms. Kay is a volunteer at the Brooklyn Cat Cafe, and also teaches at the Fordham STEP, an enrichment program for underserved students in NYC. She cares for a feral cat colony in Brooklyn and also enjoys quilting, embroidery, reading, gardening and attending live theater. Her favorite place in NYC is the New York Botanical Gardens.
